Mike Hurley of CBS Boston joins me to talk about Team USA’s disappointing finish in Sochi and why Gary Bettman and the NHL would be making a mistake to not allow players to compete in future Olympics.

After a perfect start to the 2014 Olympics, Team USA was unable to score against Canada to advance to the gold-medal game and was unable to score against Finland in the bronze-medal game. So now we will have to four more years to end the gold-medal drought, which will be at 38 years in 2018.

Derek Jeter made it official that he is leaving after this season and he is never coming back. I waited and waited for Jeter to return to the podium and say, “Just kidding!” in what would have been an elaborate, yet mean and hurtful joke. But it’s not a joke. This is the last season for Derek Jeter.

We even talked about his Syracuse basketball losing for the first time in what is expected to to be a national championship season.

Mike Miccoli of The Hockey Writers and New England Hockey Journal joins me to talk about Team USA’s dominant win over Slovakia and rooting for players in the Olympics you don’t usually root for.

It was a little nerve-racking to see Team USA tied 0-0 with Slovakia through the first 14:27 of the game on Thursday and it was even more nerve-racking when Slovakia scored to start the second period and tie the game at 1. But after thinking we might be in for a repeat of the 2006 Turin Olympics, Team USA scored six goals in the second period and started off the 2014 Olympics in the best possible way.

Mike Hurley of CBS Boston joins me to talk about Derek Jeter announcing his retirement and how he will an end an era of baseball for a generation of fans.

I knew this day would come, I just never really wanted to believe it would. Derek Jeter won’t be a Yankee in 2015 after announcing he will retire at the end of the 2014 season. Writing that doesn’t feel right and I’m not sure it will until a year from now when the Yankees get ready to head to spring training without Jeter as their starting shortstop for the first time in 20 seasons. Maybe then I will be ready to accept this news. Maybe.

With Jeter announcing his retirement and taking a piece of my childhood and the game of baseball with him, Mike Hurley of CBS Boston joined me to talk about ending an era of baseball for a generation of fans, how his retirement will change how fans in their 20s watch the game and why it’s hard for outsiders to understand how big of a deal this retirement is.
